Towns of Hoosick, Petersburgh, Grafton, Berlin and Stephentown

brownell-headshotLegislator Stan Brownell has announced his candidacy for re-election, saying he wants to continue working to provide needed services to county residents and protect quality of life.

Brownell approved a 2009 county budget that did not raise property taxes and also supported policies that resulted in an upgrade of the county's credit rating. Brownell also helped protect needed county services for seniors, veterans and youths during a tough economic climate.

"Residents are dealing with the effects of a tough economy and I am proud of the fact Rensselaer County held the line on taxes and protected services when they are needed most," said Brownell.

Brownell also joined with his legislative colleague Lester Goodermote to advocate for tough laws in the State of Vermont to protect children from paroled sex offenders. Brownell and Goodermote's efforts helped spur calls in Vermont for tougher laws.

The two legislators have also supported a county farmland protection program that has protected more than 3,000 acres of open space. Some of the protection projects have been located in District 5.

As representatives of rural District 5, which includes Hoosick, Petersburgh, Grafton, Berlin and Stephentown, Brownell said protection of the rural character and support for farming will remain priorities. Brownell also played a role in having the St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Hoosick Falls placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

"Eastern Rensselaer County has some of the most beautiful scenery and natural resources in the Northeast. I want to continue working to protect quality of life and to encourage farming and agricultural businesses," said Brownell.

Brownell serves as chairman of the important Public Works Committee, which reviews legislation related to the maintenance and improvement of county roads.

"County roads are vitally important to the daily life of our residents and businesses and one of the reasons I am seeking re-election is to continue improving our road network," said Brownell.

A lifelong resident of Hoosick Falls, Stan is the father of a son and a daughter. He is employed by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and active in the community.
