Rensselaer County Legislators – Republican Legislative Campaign Committee News ReleaseDistrict 5: Lester GoodermoteTowns of Hoosick, Petersburgh, Grafton, Berlin and Stephentown
Together with his legislative colleague Stan Brownell, Goodermote approved a 2009 county budget that did not raise property taxes. Despite the difficult economy, Goodermote helped protect needed county services. The county has also received favorable reviews of its fiscal management policies, including an upgrade in the county credit rating. Those reviews show county residents the county is moving in the right direction, said Goodermote. "We are very proud of the fact that we were able to hold the line on taxes and protect needed services during a very tough economy. It was a tough fight to hold the line, but the fight was worth it," said Goodermote. When a paroled sex offender was caught in Hoosick Falls trying to abduct two young girls, Goodermote and Brownell went into action, calling for tougher laws in Vermont. That call led to a review by Vermont lawmakers of existing laws in that state.Along with protecting public safety, Goodermote also supported a farmland protection program that has saved more than 3,000 acres of open space. Goodermote has also supported efforts to promote farming and agricultural businesses in the county. Goodermote is well known as a businessman and for his years in public service. He is the owner of the popular Potter Hill Barn, a craft and gift store located on Route 7. He also works as a tax preparer, Goodermote annually prepares tax filings for more than 2000 clients. That experience is why Goodermote joined legislators in declaring opposition to the more than 100 tax and fee increases included in the current state budget. "I see firsthand how taxes hit the average residents of our county. I am proud Rensselaer County avoided a tax increase in 2009 and want to continue fighting for our taxpayers," said Goodermote. Goodermote also served as Hoosick Town Justice from 1985 to 2000, and his fairness and ability was recognized when he was also appointed to serve as Justice of the Village of Hoosick Falls.
